The television road has been very good to me. I’ve gotten to see and experience many great places in this world and this past spring saw me and the Top 20 crew feasting (in more ways that one) on the natural beauty of the Ozarks and the amazing resort, Big Cedar Lodge.
Owned by Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris, this place is just out of this world-I’ve never seen anything like it. There are miles of trails through the Ozark Mountains, a 4-story cave, famous Table Rock lake, a world class golf course, marina, many rustic cabins and first class accommodations, and of course–great food!!
We taped our Top 20 Countdown all over the property and stopped for lunch at the Top 0f the Rock, which is this incredible facility overlooking the golf course and the lake and houses a museum, the pro shop, and several restaurants, including Arnie’s Barn…as in legendary Arnold Palmer.
It was an actual old barn in Arnold Palmer’s hometown of Latrobe, PA. Johnny Morris hired a local craftsman and his family to disassemble the barn and its 46-foot timbers. They numbered each piece, transported it to Missouri and put it all back together at the Top 0f the Rock. Some of the pieces of timber are so old that historians are actually carbon dating them! The fare is delicious Mexican food and when you marry that with the decor and the scenery, it was a one of the most memorable crew lunches this TV gal has ever had.
I ordered from the tacos section–the Dos Equis Battered Cod served with lime aioli, spicy chipotle salsa and cilantro slaw and it was great. I loved the Mexico City street corn that came with it. I ate every bite on my plate.
The only thing missing was more time to sit and enjoy the ambience, the view, and the dessert menu 🙂
This delicious meal helped our crew make great television on a long shoot day and made for one of my favorite Top 20s to date! Thank you, Big Cedar Lodge for an incredible shoot filled with all winning ingredients–an ace crew, beautiful scenery, fantastic food, and wonderful people.
I’m going back for a vacation to see this sunset again. Breathtaking.
