The one appliance I can’t and won’t do without is my West Bend slowcooker. I use it at least twice a week–everything from soups, stews, roasts, even breads and cakes–yes, cake!! Look for a chocolate cake video recipe soon. I got it as a wedding gift 13 years ago and it hasn’t missed a beat. This thing is the biggest help for cooks on the go because you throw your ingredients in the pan on the way out the door to work and when you come in, dinner is ready! It is effortless cooking and the flavor is wonderful. Low temp cooking helps all the flavors meld together and the tougher, less expensive cuts of meat tenderize really well in the slow cooker, so you can save on your bottom line by buying the cheaper cuts. I brown a roast in the pan on the stovetop (it has a non stick surface) and then put the pan on its base to finish cooking–so it acts as both a skillet/saucepan and a slow cooker. I love it! If you don’t have one, try it. Create wonderful meals while you’re out shopping or working, save on your grocery bills with the cheaper cuts of meat and the best part–you only have one pan to wash!
