Part 2 of my San Francisco salute! My favorite restaurant in San Francisco is House of Nanking. I love it.
First, I’m sold on the name…of course. Secondly, the food alone is worth the flight out there! This was my second trip to San Francisco working with my friends, Scott and Kimberly Moening and it’s becoming a tradition that the whole crew gets together for at least one meal at House of Nanking.
House of Nanking is in Chinatown and is this small, somewhat nondescript (and I say that with all due respect! I don’t go to a restaurant for the lavish scenery–I go for great tasting food) restaurant known for having lines out the door every day of hungry folks waiting for a table. It’s very well known and loved by many. Our group did exactly as we did the last visit–we didn’t order from the menu, we just let them bring out what they wanted. That’s half the fun of it. You don’t know what you’re getting, but you can rest assured it’s gonna be great!! So family style it was and the food started flowing.
The cream sauce, the seasoning, the light breading on the shrimp, the apples—yes, I said APPLES!!! Never heard of a shrimp dish with apples and I wanted to eat the whole plate! I was pretty exhausted from traveling that day AND in anticipation of going to House of Nanking, I had only eaten a Chiclet for lunch, so the combination of hungry and tired equaled ‘don’t get between me and this food’. But, I restrained as best I could, didn’t act ‘hoggish’ as Linda Davis says and savored every delicious bite. It is simply outstanding and not to be missed if you go there.
Pork Dumplings. Again, outstanding. The slightly spicy and tangy sauce did not disappoint. I wanted more of them too! And then the beef. First off, I don’t really eat much beef. I never order it at a restaurant because it’s just not on my food radar like other things. However, this dish was exceptional. The beef was incredibly tender and had a hint of curry to it, along with a flavor that I couldn’t put my finger on.
All that said, the meal was second only to the company. I’ve worked with the Moenings and MPG for a long time, so we’re like family at this point and nothing brings family together like food. Whether it’s pork dumplings or PB&Js, it’s the company that counts….but I’m glad it was pork dumplings! Go to House of Nanking and tell ’em Nan sent cha 🙂 919 Kearny St, San Francisco, CA 94133 (415) 421-1429
