My main New Year’s resolution (along with the obligatory ‘get in shape’) was to get organized, so I’m going through the house-room by room! One trick that has helped me tremendously to get organized in the kitchen and also has helped cut down on the food bill every month is to store food in seal-tight, uniform containers. My mother-in-law, the now famous Miss Pat introduced me to these wonderful containers from Lock & Lock a few years back and I have since ordered two sets of them and will probably be adding a third real soon! I love them for several reasons. One is their uniform shape which is ideal for stacking and sorting- you can make the most of the real estate in your pantry, while creating an uncluttered view. Secondly, food stays fresher longer & doesn’t become a playground for weevils or pests. They have silicon seals that are air and water tight, so you aren’t wasting crackers or chips because they’ve became stale within a few days of opening them and you’re not providing a free lunch for uninvited guests. And lastly, one important key to getting organized is to be able to see what you have. If you can see it, you’ll use what you have and not waste it (you know the old adage ‘Out of sight, out of mind) and you won’t over buy or you’ll know when to buy. I love that I can glance up in the cupboard and scan through the levels of the containers to see what I need to pick up at the grocery that day. They’re BPA-free, stain resistant, freezer, microwave & dishwasher safe and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The cereal one is my favorite-it has a snap top lip that makes pouring easy and you’ll never wonder ‘did I roll that little waxy bag down tight enough so it doesn’t open back up in the box?’ The storage ideas are endless: crackers, cereal, pasta, granola, flour, lasagna noodles, powdered sugar, corn meal, etc. Perfect, too for things with odd shapes that don’t stack well together, like baking ingredients–chocolate chips, sliced almonds, yeast packets, etc. I bought mine from QVC, but I think you can find them online at Amazon & variety of other outlets or you can get them directly from the manufacturer.
