A few years ago, Charlie and I planted black eyed susans in our front flower bed. Charlie wanted them because they’re the state flower of his home state, Maryland. I wanted them because they’re just beautiful. Well, ever since then, just as they were getting ready to bloom and reveal those picturesque black and gold flowers, deer ate the tops off. Plucked the blooms right off, leaving the leaves and stems, sans flower at the top. Not a pretty sight. (Here’s my post from 2104 http://onepannan.com/all-gods-children-gotta-eat/)Now, I love animals and wildlife and I certainly love seeing them in our yard and neighborhood. And I realize that all God’s children have got to eat-just not the tops of my black eyed susans, please! So what to do?? Luckily, we found a product that won’t harm the plants or the animals and have kept the deer at bay.
In comes some pungent spray to save the day! Charlie ran to Lowe’s and found this Deer and Rabbit repellent by Liquid Fence. He sprayed in on the plants and around the perimeter and lo and behold, the deer have stay away all summer and the flowers are beautiful. And right on the bottle it says “Harmless to plants & animals” Win, win!! Be prepared for the smell. Given that the first ingredient is putrescent whole egg solids, it’s no wonder. I can put up with the smell because it’s harmless and it’s effective. I was visiting my neighbor yesterday and she commented on our black eyed susans and how pretty they were. I told her about my secret spray and she pointed to her hydrangeas and said that’s what had saved hers! So the word is out–if you’re looking for something to keep Bambi and his buddies from making a happy meal out of your hydrangeas or an appetizer of your azaleas, give the Liquid Fence spray a go. It’s works at our house!
